I found an older article by Jim Rhon below that is quite timely as the IWKA Championships are just 9 days away.

In an article by Jim Rohn, FACING THE ENEMIES WITHIN, I found a number of thoughts that I find tie in very well with the martial arts as well as life in general. We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Maybe some of our fears are brought on by experiences, by what someone has told us, by what we’ve read in the papers. Some fears are valid, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o’clock in the morning. Once we learn to avoid that situation, we won’t need to live in fear of it. Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions. Fear can destroy fortunes. Fear can destroy relationships. Fear, if left unchecked, can destroy our lives. Fear is one of the many enemies lurking inside us. Let’s investigate briefly five of the other enemies we face from within.

The first enemy that we must destroy before it destroys us is indifference. This tragic disease is the “Ho-hum, let it slide. I’ll just drift along.” Here’s one problem with drifting: we cannot drift our way to the top of a   mountain or improve upon our abilities.

The second enemy we face is indecision. Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future. To improve we must make a decision or take a chance.

The third enemy inside is doubt. There is room for healthy skepticism. Everything cannot be believed. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities. Worse of all, they doubt themselves. Doubt will destroy life and chances of success if not balanced with intelligence. We must work to improve upon our abilities and self assurance, which will help us to become leaders in our communities.

The fourth enemy within is worry.   Worry can be useful. If you step off a curb and a car is coming, you’ve got to worry. But do not let worry loose like a mad dog that drives us into a small corner. Balance concern with intelligence – drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get you, you’ve got to control it. Whatever is pushing on you, you’ve got to push back.

The fifth interior enemy is over-caution. It is the timid approach to life. Timidity is not a virtue; it’s an illness. If permitted, it’ll conquer our spirit. Timid people don’t get promoted. They don’t advance, grow or become a positive part of the community. Strive to be a Force of ONE. Individuals with conviction can and do make a difference.

Do battle with fear. Build the courage to fight what’s creating the drawbacks in life. Keep goals and dreams in your mind and heart.   Be courageous in life and in the pursuit of the things that will assist you in becoming the person you want to become.

Do you ever wish you could look into the future and see where you will be and what you will be doing? I am not talking about paying money to “psychics” or reading tea leaves and cards. What I am talking about is much more accurate and reliable. You can see your own future and it won’t cost you any money.

If you want to know what your future is going to be like, don’t look into a crystal ball. Instead, take a look at your present thoughts. Your present thoughts determine your future.

The thoughts you have form your belief system. And, if you want to see your belief system, which is just a collection of thoughts you accept as true, take a look at your life. Your life is your belief, made into reality.

For instance, if you believe there is never enough, that life is a struggle, that you will have to fight for what you get, then you will never have enough, and you will struggle and fight your way through life.

If you believe there is no limit to what you can do, and adversity just makes you stronger, then your life will be one of achievement and resiliency. Understand that what you see in life depends mainly on what you look for. This means that everything you see, everything you do, everything you hear and think and wonder about is filtered through your belief system.

So, if you want to shape your future into a happy, productive, fulfilling time, eliminate negative thoughts about what you don’t want, in favor of positive ones about what you do.
