The Isshin-ryu School of Karate…

• Is celebrating it’s 32nd year as an established member of the Hackettstown Community–since 1979
• Hosts benefit tournaments yearly for charity and has done so since 1986
• Organizes classes for children from age 5 and also has flexible class schedules for adults
• Has 20 Black Belts, each with a minimum of 5 years of karate training
• Is organizing the Kick-it Drug Free Program for area school children
• Hosted the 1999 Isshin-ryu World Karate Association Championships, which was held at Legend’s Resort in McAfee, NJ on August 13 & 14, 1999
• Hosted the 2007 Isshin-ryu World Karate Association Championships, which was held at the Westin Hotel in Princeton, N.J. on June 28, 29 & 30, 2007.

Kyoshi John E. Hughes has been studying Isshin-ryu Karate since 1973. On March 1, 2008 Master William H. Duessel, 9th Degree Black Belt, with whom he has been studying since 1985, promoted him to 8th Degree Black Belt. He is one of 7 people who have earned this rank from the Isshinryu World Karate Association (IWKA).

He has been inducted into the Don Nagle’s American Okinawan Karate Association, International Association of Martial Arts and World Karate Union Halls of Fame. He is a retired teacher at Hackettstown High School, a certified athletic trainer and is currently a senior adjunct professor of English at Warren County Community College.
